where We are from

We are from a specific Barony
What is a Barony ?? You may not think the boundaries of a Barony would be important, unless it is the only identifier which you have to place your ancestors back in Ireland. Although not ususally used by family members to relate their history, a Barony is a district, often within a County, to define a court juristiction. Baronial records can be used for genealogical purposes and are relevant to certain types of records.

A Barony can be thought of as the name of the district once originally given to a Baron, or a noble, as duchy to a Duke, or marche to a Marquis, or county to to a Count. This region may represent the first "official" written boundary notation enclosure specifically identified when divided up by the "planter settlers", or Crown endowment estates. Some may represent ancient subdivisions.

Did you have a Baron in the family?

The Red Baron was a popular character figure in both stories of Word War I and the first bi-wing aeroplanes, and also as a animated cartoon rrival to Snoopy of the Charlie Brown series.

The Baron in terms of Ireland, and particularly as it releates to Genealogy and Family history, is an elusive entity upon first learning. But there are archival records produced and filed under these divisions which might be useful.

A Part Played by the Barony

"An almost universal acquaintance with a traditional literature was a leading trait of the Irish down to the last century, when every barony and almost every townland still possessed its poet and reciter, and song, recitation, music, and oratory were the recognized amusements of nearly the whole population." -- Douglas Hyde
