Civil Parish DistrictsWithin each county and Barony are a patchwork of sub-districts known as civil parishes, often centered around and named after a church parish. There are approximately 2500 to 3000 civil parish divisions in Ireland according to the reverse geneaology website irelandxo.com, a register charity, funded in part by the Republic of Ireland, whose goal is to strengthen parish ties in the homeland. Don't get a civil parish mixed up with a church parish. While many civil parish boudaries are similar or matchup to those of the Church of Ireland (Protestant), whereas the Roman Catholic parish boundaries may reflect a different area or overlap. Both religious parishes are typically grouped with others into a Diocese or Episcopal See. Within each Civil parish are contained a number of smaller districts know as Townlands, which may then contain Towns, Villages, Manor Estates, or farmland. Thus, many "placenames" may be found within the same parish. Strategies for Discovery
