O'Sullivan or Sullivan is said to spring from the rootword Suihl or Eye, and may mean Hawk Eye.

O'Curry, says it means Suildhubhain "Black Eye" and emphasises that it is NOT Suilabhain the Eochaidh Suilamhain "One Eyed" who tore his last eye out as a gift to the poet Aithirne 33A.D..
