Census Substitutes

One area that has been greatly under-used, particularly in Ireland, are the City and County Directories.

These are perfect census substitutes, which in the average model provides name, occupation, and address. That is a better identifyer than even the 1790 to 1840 census in the USA. And yet they are rarely referenced, and hard to locate for viewing, cumbersome to manually browse, and rarely in searchable electronic form.

The series for Dublin is excellent, ranging from 1790 to at least 1850. But many of these publications are country wide, which also inclulde smaller towns, and throughout the island. Such inclusion is of even more benefit to a small community, where the chances of a connection to a family, landlord, or further clues are proportionately greater.

These, in conjunction with the oft mentioned Flax List, Hearth Tax, Freemans Lists, Griffiths Evaluation, Tithe Applotment, Ordinance Maps, Encombered Estates Reports, Census, Samuel Lewis Gazeteer, and local newspapers, can realy paint a multiple picture of a local community district or neighborhood.

More of these need to be actively located, scanned or transcribed in searchable form or indexed.

We will present some of these soon. In the meanwhile, submit to our Target 1798 project.
