Fomorians

Hyde, O'Curry, Keating, and their sources, trace them from "Africa". But where? Is there a racial or ethnic discovery to be found in these theories? How much of the continent was populated at that time and by whom? Are they Carththogenian (Phoenician Sicilian) Lybian Berber Moor Arabic Egyptians Ethiopians ?? According to the Annals of Clonmacnoise the Fomorians are descendants of Cham (Ham) the son of Noah.

The first record of the Fomorians in the Annals of the Four Masters is in a battle with the Partholans, dated "in the age of the world 2530". But it is not clear if this was the first association of the Fomorians with Ireland, who arrived before Partholan, (A.M.1656) according to Keating, and the footnote to the 4Masters [1856 edition O'Cleary, Keating, Holiday]. Ten years after the Partholans arrived in Ireland they fought "Cichol clapperlag of the Fomoraig" in the "Battle of Slemna of Mag Itha" according to The Book of Invasions, but Keating shows a Ciocal from Uhdmhoir thriving in Ireland 200 years before Partholan. Who was Cical, grandson of Garbh?

How did these same Fomorians later decimate 60,000 Nemedians (per Keating) who had just won 3 victories and taken the Fomorians stronghold base, "the Tower" or cliffs of Tory Island off northwest Donegal? Who was the Fomorian leader, Conainn, son of Faebhar (the Conan of Conans Tower or Conings Tower)?

Keating suggests they did not speak Gaelic, but were called Fomhorigah meaning "robbers on the sea", controling the north islands. Would that include the Hebrides before the Picts and Vikings. Are they related to the Orkney Island "Orcadians" (?Arcadians? an ancient Greek region?), todays staunchly independant non-celtic non-scot peoples of these far northern Scotland isles? Keating surprises us that there were no Picts yet in Scotland at that time, until at-the-earliest 300 to 500 years later, when they migrated from Ireland, where they were known as Cruidth. (?harp players?!)
